How two spouses who file taxes jointly can co-own an investment through a single profile.
If you and your spouse file your taxes jointly and want to co-own an investment, you can do it through a single investment profile. This guide walks through how to set it up.
The short version: create one profile titled in both of your names as joint tenants, enter the SSN of the first-named spouse, and both of you sign. One profile, one K-1, both names on it.
Set up a single investment profile — not two — with the following fields:
John Doe and Jane Doe.JTWROS.The goal is for the full investor name to read as "John Doe and Jane Doe, JTWROS." That's the name of record that carries through to your subscription documents and your K-1.
Enter the SSN of the first-named spouse — the one listed first in the name field above. This follows IRS standards for joint accounts. Your K-1 will show both names but carry that one SSN.
Only one spouse is required to enter into the subscription and sign the documents.
If both spouses need to sign individually, follow the off-platform signature process instead.
Setting up a profile this way relies on a few assumptions. By using it, you're agreeing to them:
You file your taxes jointly. This structure is built for married couples filing a joint return. The single-SSN K-1 works cleanly because both spouses' income flows onto the same return.
If that changes, it's on you to sort out. If you later file separately, divorce, or separate, it becomes your responsibility to resolve how the investment's income and ownership are split and reported. We issue the K-1 under the profile as set up; we don't reallocate it for you.
Survivorship follows standard common law. Titling the account as joint tenants with right of survivorship means that, under standard common law, the surviving spouse takes full ownership of the membership interest automatically if one spouse passes — without going through probate.
This isn't tax advice, and how joint holders are handled can vary. If you're unsure, check with your tax advisor. Questions about setting up the profile? Contact us at team@seedlabs.com.
